The Athirum Valparai Ride | 23–25 October

When the Rain Tested Us, the Forest Surprised Us, and the Road Gave Us Stories to Tell!

Some rides are planned. Some rides challenge you. And some become stories you'll be telling for years. Our Athirum Valparai ride was all three!

On 23 October, The Knight Ryders rolled out of Chennai at 5 AM, ready for three days of scenic roads, forest adventures and the much-awaited Athirappilly route. But nature had a completely different plan for us. What followed was our first-ever ride through relentless, heavy rain β€” not the kind of drizzle that adds charm to a ride, but rain that soaked us completely and made every kilometre a challenge!

Day 1 β€” Chennai to Valparai: Rain, Resilience and a Race Against Time

The rain accompanied us almost throughout the journey. Riding conditions were tough, and we had to take frequent breaks to regroup and recover. Every stop, however, came with an unexpected delay before we could get moving again. Eventually, time caught up with us, and we had to skip lunch altogether to keep moving towards Valparai.

Our target was to reach the Valparai checkpost before the entry deadline. Thankfully, we made it by 4:45 PM, just in time! Everyone had obtained the mandatory e-pass, but one thing we hadn't prepared for was rain of this intensity. Every set of clothes we had carried was wet, leaving us with very few dry options.

After a demanding day on the road, we checked into Whispering Falls Resort, Valparai, our base for the stay. It was time to unwind, recover and prepare for the highlight of the trip.

Day 2 β€” Valparai to Athirappilly: Into the Land of Waterfalls

On the morning of 24 October, we started at 9 AM for the route we'd been eagerly waiting to ride β€” the forest stretch towards Athirappilly.

We later learnt that entry was permitted as early as 6:30 AM, which would have given us a much earlier start and a better chance to enjoy the route. Still, the experience that awaited us was nothing short of spectacular.

This is truly a land of waterfalls! As we rode through the forest, one waterfall after another appeared along the way. Lush greenery, winding roads, the sounds of flowing water and the feeling of riding deep into nature made this stretch the soul of our journey.

And then came an unexpected highlight β€” a small wild elephant near a pond! Seeing wildlife in its natural surroundings was a memorable moment and a reminder that we were visitors in a landscape that belongs to nature. We kept our distance and enjoyed the sight responsibly.

With plenty of breaks, photographs and time to appreciate the surroundings, we made the most of the day before returning to Valparai around 5 PM. The evening was relaxed, with dinner, conversations and the satisfaction of having experienced one of the most beautiful riding routes of the trip.

Day 3 β€” Valparai to Chennai: One Last Ride Together

On 25 October, we packed up and started our return journey at 8 AM. Thankfully, the rain had finally given us a break! The ride was much more comfortable, although traffic and our regular breaks stretched the journey longer than expected.

During the return, we stopped for lunch at The Kongu Kitchen, right next to Venu Biriyani. It turned out to be a comfortable stop with fewer crowds, giving us a welcome chance to sit down, relax and recharge before continuing towards Chennai.

After a long day on the road, we finally reached Chennai at around 10 PM, bringing our three-day adventure to a close.

What a Ride It Was!

This wasn't a perfect ride β€” and that's exactly what made it special.

We battled relentless rain, rode with completely soaked clothes, skipped lunch, raced against the checkpost deadline, explored a breathtaking forest route, spotted a wild elephant, discovered countless waterfalls and shared the kind of moments that only the open road can offer.

The rain tested our preparation and patience. The forest rewarded our effort. And the journey reminded us why we keep coming back to our motorcycles.

Three days. Relentless rain. Endless waterfalls. One wild elephant encounter. Countless memories.

Because for The Knight Ryders, a ride isn't just about the destination. It's about the roads we take, the challenges we overcome and the people who ride beside us.
